UCoMS Advisory Committee Meeting 2010-04-30
A UCoMS Advisory Committee meeting took place on April 30, 2010 in the UL, Lafayette campus, with 5 committee members in presence. Team members from all three institutions provided a comprehensive presentation on research progress and achievement. The UCoMS team received candidid comments and valuable guidance on the research direction and focus going forward. One UCoMS overall poster plus eight topic posters were displayed for the commitee members to review and to interact with contributing team members, and they can be downloaded here.


Supercomputing 2009 Exhibition 2009-11-16
For five consecutive years, UCoMS had a research exhibit booth during the most attended computing and communication forum, called Supercomputing (SC). Held in Portland, Oregon during Nov. 16 to 19, SC '09 had more research booths, which drew high traffic. The UCoMS booth showcased the progress and prototype of research components fully, hosted by 6 research participants. Success at such an event was attributed to teamwork and dedication. NSF Research Award 2009-08-01
UCoMS investigator, Nian-Feng Tzeng, received a 3-year research grant of $364,000 for investigation into adaptive checkpointing on wireless Grids, with the goal of turning a typical wireless mesh network (WMN) into a computing platform that complements and expands the wired Grid to which the WMN is connected. Key technical challenges in establishing such productive wireless Grids are to be addressed in this project, as can be found here.


DoE EPSCoR Program Review 2009-07-20
A good representation by UCoMS in the 2009 DoE Program Review meeting during July 20-23 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory was evidenced by having one extended abstract and two poster abstracts included in the meeting Proceedings. An invited presentation was also given by Dr. Michael Khonsari with Louisiana Board of Regents, as UCoMS Project Director, on July 22.


UCoMS Advisory Committee Meeting 2009-01-22
UCoMS team met with its Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) on January 22, 2009 in the Louisiana Board of Regents' office building to present its recent progress and achievement. With 5 committee members in presence, this meeting was very productive and informative in providing UCoMS team members with timing and valuable comments and guidance for the research direction and focus going forward. Two TAC members were new to this project, and they offered especially constructive and candid technical criticism from their standpoints as National Academic Engineering members. A TAC report was prepared and released to the research team for helpful information.


Supercomputing 2008 Exhibit 2008-11-17
UCoMS had a research exhibit booth (of 20' by 10') during SC '08 from Nov. 17 to 20 to showcase its progress and prototype. Those some 10,000 attendees presented substantial traffic to the UCoMS booth, which was hosted successfully by 8 senior students. Success at such an event was attributed to teamwork and dedication. NSF Research Award 2008-08-07
A research grant on information network with delay-endurable RFID support was awarded to UCoMS team members, Hongyi Wu and Nian-Feng Tzeng. The 3-year grant of $366,000 intends to expand the RFID gear application for wireless network construction, relevant to the design and implementation of wireless and sensor networks essential for the UCoMS project. DOE EPSCoR Program Review 2008-07-22
The UCoMS research cluster presented 3 posters during 2008 DoE EPSCoR State/National Lab Program Review, July 22-24, in Oak Ridge National Lab. Totally, 7 cluster members attended the meeting, with 2 from Louisiana BoR, 4 from UL Lafayett, and 1 from Southern University, Baton Rouge. Sample photos of the event are shown here.


NSF Grant Received 2008-07-21
An MRI (major research infrastructure) grant of $500,000 was awarded by NSF to UCoMS research team members, Magdy Bayoumi and Hongyi Wu with University of Louisiana, for acquiring a wireless nanonetworks integration and emulation system. This 3-year grant helps to establish an ultra wideband radio frequency integrated circuits design flow for RF nodes. Details can be found here.


UCoMS Research Cluster Meeting 2008-05-01
Recent UCoMS research cluster meeting took place at University of Louisiana campus on May 1, 2008, with informative presentations by key investigators on accomplishments and progress made since project Phase II started in August 2007. It allowed participants to iron out collaborative issues related to end-to-end system integration.


Techsouth Exhibit 2008-04-08
UCoMS participated in TechSouth 2008 during April 8-9, 2008, held in Lafayette, Louisiana, being one of some 50 booths showcased. Research prototyping on end-to-end well site monitoring and surveillance was demonstrated, attracting diverse audience. Collaborative opportunities resulted from this exhibit. See sample photos.


DOE Reverse Site Visit 2007-10-29
UCoMS research project team was invited to have a reverse site visit at DoE Germantown on October 29, 2007, presenting research progress and key outcomes. Eleven (11) project investigators made the productive visit, attended by three DoE evaluation committee members (Dr. Walter Polansky, Dr. Kristin Bennett, and Dr. Robert Lindsay), who provided constructive comments and objective critics on project activities for improvement and expansion. Visit Preparation Meeting 2007-10-17
A preparation meeting for the DoE reverse site visit was held at Louisiana Board of Regents on October 17, 2007, with investigatos from all three instituions participating, to finalize the format and contents for use during the site visit (see photos).


UCoMS Advisory Committee Meeting 2007-10-02
Annual Advisory Committee meeting of the UCoMS research project was held at Louisiana Board of Regents on October 2, 2007, with four committee members participating. Candid and timely suggestions and guidance were made by the members to help shape up the project scope and focuses during Phase II, outlined in a committee report forwarded to all team members for information.


UCoMS Research Cluster Meeting 2007-09-07
UCoMS research cluster meeting took place at Louisiana Board of Regents on September 7, 2007, providing an opportunity for new investigators in Phase II of the project to get acquainted with all team members and also for dealing with reviewers' comments on our project renewal proposal. It was a very informative and productive meeting.


DOE EPSCoR Review Workshop 2007-07-23
Five UCoMS research investigators from three Louisiana participting institutions plus two Louisiana BoR representatives attended 2007 DOE EPSCoR State/National Laboratory Program Review Workshop during July 23-25, 2007, held in Golden, Colorado. Four posters showcasing UCoMS research accomplishments were demonstrated successfully, drawing considerable attention and prompting several collaborative opportunities. Conference Participation 2007-04-01
UCoMS team members actively participated in 2007 Digital Energy Conference, sponsored by Societyt of Petroleum Engineers, during April 11-12, including two poster presentations on the high performance computing track. In addition, team members also showcased their research results in National Technical Conference and Exhibition, American Association of Drilling Engineers (AADE) in Houston during April 10-12. Specifically, the poster on "Observation and Modeling of Torsional Vibration Regimes" by Richard Duff received the third place award at AADE 2007.


2nd Advisory Committee Meeting 2006-12-12
The second UCoMS Advisory Committee meeting took place on December 12, 2006 at the Board of Regents, State of Louisiana. Many valuable suggestions for project activities and focuses were made by committee members, who also provided timely guidance for the future directon and scope of this project.


UCoMS Research Cluster Meeting 2006-12-4
An informative and educated UCoMS research cluster meeting was held on December 4 in the Foundation meeting room of UL, Lafayette, attended by project participants from all three involved institutions. Hongyi Wu delivered progress report on sensors and wireless mesh networks (report PDF), and Zhou Lei plus LSU PE investigators reported research progress on Grid computing and PE applications (report PDF). Additionally, Paul Darby summarized UL's research progress on Grid computing (report PDF) and Adam Lewis described research prototypes and a wireless mesh network testbed (presentation slides PDF).


Dr. Seidel Received Sidney Fernbach Award 2006-11-15
UCoMS Co-PI, Dr. Ed Seidel, received the prestigious 2006 Sidney Fernbach Award during IEEE/ACM Supercomputing (SC|06) in Tampa, Florida on November 15, 2006 for his "outstanding contributions to the development of software for HPC and Grid computing to enable the collaborative numerical investigation of complex problems in physics; in particular, modeling black hole collisions." Congratulations, Ed.!

Exhibit Booth at SC|06 2006-11-13
UCoMS put up an exhibit booth at IEEE/ACM Supercomputing (SC|06) during November 13-16, 2006 to showcase research outcomes and demonstrate prototypes, including mobile Grid development and the use of a Grid tool to manage and control wireless sensor networks. The booth drew considerable visitors and gave wide publicity to the research community and National Labs' participants, initiating several possible collaborative opportunities. Dr. Bayoumi Elected as Vice President of CAS 2006-11-01
UCoMS Co-PI, Dr. Magdy Bayoumi, was elected as Vice President - Conferences, of the IEEE Circuits and Systems (CAS) Society, in charge of more than 60 technical conferences, symposia, and workshops during 2006 and 2007. Information about the IEEE CAS Society is here. Congratulations, Magdy!


Sensor Programming Contest at SUBR 2006-10-1
Extremely high interest and enthusiasm were generated during recent sensor programming contest sponsored by UCoMS and held in the CS Department of the Southern University, Baton Rouge (SUBR), campus from October 1 to November 3, 2006. Open to all SUBR undergraduates and graduates, this contest motivated lots of interactions and discussion among SUBR students, with more than 10 students formally signing up. An award ceremony took place on November 9 at the CS Department of SUBR allowing the top two contest winners to present their work to their peer students, with more than 25 SUBR students and faculty members attending the ceremony. Drs. Seidel and Allen Funded 2006-08-01
UCoMS Co-PIs, Drs. Ed Seidel and Gabrielle Allen, are Co-PIs of a project newly funded via MRI of NSF, entitled "Development of PetaShare: A Distributed Data Archival, Analysis and Visualization System for Data Intensive Collaborative Research," $957,678, from August 2006 to July 2010. Zhou Lei Funded 2006-08-01
Zhou Lei is Co-PI of a project on "Testing and Modeling of Blast Response of Functionality Graded Composite Armor," funded with $300,000 by US Department of Defense, from August 2006 to August 2009.


Dr. Bayoumi Funded 2006-06-01
UCoMS Co-PI, Dr. Magdy Bayoumi, is PI of an NSF-funded project on "CRI: MEMS Integration Infrastructure," $298,848, from June 2006 to May 2008. See award details.


UCoMS Research Cluster Meeting 2006-05-31
A productive UCoMS research cluster meeting took place on May 31 in the Alumni House of UL, Lafayette, attended by more than 30 project participants. Progress reports were delivered by Hongyi Wu (report PDF), Zhou Lei plus LSU PE investigators (report PDF), and UL PE participants (report PDF). In addition, exhibits were set up to showcase research prototypes and testbeds, and they were demonstrated by Adam Lewis (presentation slides PDF) and Promita Chakraborty (presentation slides PDF).


UCoMS Exhibit at TechSouth 2006 2006-04-26
The successful UCoMS exhibit at TechSouth 2006 (April 26-28, 2006) includes a wireless mesh network and a wireless data acquisition system. The former delivers video streams over wireless routes among mobile users running the NetMeeting application, whereas the latter realizes wireless transmission of sensor readings to a data collector, serving as the basis of a wireless sensor data acquisition system under development together with TETRA Production Testing Services (our industrial partner) and supported technically by NuFlo Measurement Systems. The exhibit has drawn considerable interest from different petroleum production and service companies, yielding a few collaborative opportunities in pursuit. Zhou Lei Funded 2006-01-01
Zhou Lei serves as PI of projects on "Multiphase Engineering Simulations Leveraging Grid Computing," "Enabling Mote Carlo," and "Collaborative Grid for Mechanical Engineering," funded with $59,000 by CCT GDP from January 2006 to June 2007.


Dr. Allen Awarded 2006-01-01
UCoMS Co-PI, Dr. Gabrielle Allen, leads a project on "DDDAS-TRP: DynaCode: A General DDDAS Framework with Coast and Environment Modeling Applications," which has been awarded with $220,000 by National Science Foundation for the duaration from January 2006 to December 2006. Dr. Bayoumi Awarded 2005-08-01
Dr. Maddy Bayoumi et al. received an NSF grant of $46,940, working on a project entitled "A Framework for Automated Scene Surveillance: Algorithms, Architecture, and Prototyping," from August 2005 to December 2007.


Dr. Perkins Received NSF CAREER Award 2005-01-01
Dr. Dmitri Perkins has received prestigious 2005 CAREER award from NSF. This five-year award of $400,000 enables him to investigate into the design and implementation of large-scale ad hoc networking systems able to support heterogeneous traffic types involves various factors that interact in a complex manner.


Drs. Tzeng and Wu Received Grant 2005-06-01
Drs. Nian-Feng Tzeng and Hongyi Wu received a research grant from the Louisiana Board of Regents Support Fund, under the Industrial Ties Research Subprogram, in June 2005. This 3-year project of $150,000 aims to develop approaches for improving wireless data communications under high congestion.


First Advisory Committee Meeting 2005-11-29
The first Advisory Committee meeting of the UCoMS project took place on November 29, 2005 at the Board of Regents, State of Louisiana. Committee members provded extremely helpful suggestions and valuable guidance for the project. Report documents presented by project participants during the meeting included: Project Overview and Achievement Summary, Wireless and Sensor Networks, Grid Computing, and Applications.


Drs. Lei and White Granted Funding 2005-11-1
UCoMS investigators, Drs. Zhou Lei and Chris White, were granted with 30,000 SUs under TeraGrid DAC, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.


UCoMS Exhibit at SC|05 2005-11-1
UCoMS project was demonstrated on Supercomputing 2005 in November at Seattle, Washington. UCoMS researcher Santiago Pena received a travel award to attend the conference, working as a student volunteer.


UCoMS Researchers Awarded 2005-06-27
UCoMS researcher Dayong Huang was awarded scholarship to attend Global Grid Forum 14, held in Chicago, June 27-30, 2005. In addition, UCoMS researchers Archit Kulshrestha and Xin Li were awarded scholarship to attend a summer school for grid computing at South Padre Island, Texas, during July 11-15, 2005.


2005 DOE/NSF EPSCoR Conference Participation 2005-06-14
Participation by UCoMS in the 2005 DOE/NSF EPSCoR Conference, June 14-16, 2005, was very active and well received. Dr. Michael Khonsari served as an EPSCoR State panelist. In addition, Dr. Dmitri Perkins and Paul Darby both delivered poster articles in the conference, while Dr. John Smith attended the conference.


Technical Meeting Attendance 2005-05-15
UCoMS researchers participated in the NSF-funed technical meeting, Grid Compuing and Advanced Networking Technologies for E-Science, May 15-21, 2005. Specifically, Santiago Pena was awarded a scholarship to attend the meeting, while Gabrielle Allen delivered two talks on "Grid Introduction and Fundamentals Review" and "Grid Security and Basic Access", respectively.


UCoMS Exhibit at TechSouth 2005 2005-04-19
The UCoMS exhibit at TechSouth 2005 (April 19-20, 2005) was a huge success, generating significant interest among participants. The TechSouth IT Summit and Expo offers a unique networking and educational opportunity for participants to learn about the latest technology breakthroughs.

The UCoMS exhibit demonstrated a wireless testbed comprising a network of wireless sensors, antennas, and receivers to collect environmental parameters, which are routed to a central processing facility. For photos of the UCoMS exhibit, click here.


Drs. Bayoumi and Allen Spoke in LONI Forum 2004-09-02
Dr. Bayoumi and Dr. Allen spoke in the LONI Forum on September 2, 2004, addressing research topics related to UCoMS. Wireless equipment was exhibited in the Forum, as illustrated in the following photos.
