Facilities

(1) Wireless and Sensor Network Systems

Sensors and wireless devices can be placed at strategic locations for data collection and information distribution. Sensors interface with the data sources either directly (e.g., with the security sensors around the production infrastructure for intrusion protection) or indirectly (e.g., with the Drillstem Server that receives high-bandwidth measured data from downhole sensors through the telemetry drill pipe). Certain sensors also serve as data sources themselves, and they will be equipped with TinyOS (open source software) and loaded with the proposed MAC, routing, and transport protocols. One or multiple sensor nodes may be designated (with Ethernet interface) to act as block gateways (BGWs).

Wireless base routers and Ethernet bridges are employed to create wireless mesh networks for connecting BGWs and also for delivering sensor data and production management information. An integrated wireless mesh network testbed has been developed and deployed, aiming to interconnect scattered BGWs. It consists of wireless mesh routers, each of which contains one Soekris motherboard and two IEEE 802.11a/b/g radio cards, running an optimized link state routing protocol. Specific design, implementation, and application issues are identified and being addressed.

Multiple wireless mesh networks located far apart are to be connected using long-haul communication gear, including Proxim Tsunami MP.11 base station units, Proxim Tsunami MP.11 subscriber units, 7 dBi omni, 5 dBi omni, and 24 dBi directional parabolic antennae. A completely functional, preliminary indoor/outdoor testbed has been developed and under evaluation.

Research topics being pursued under this project include the following.

  • Enhancement to MAC (medium access control) Protocols
This research has enhanced the SYN-MAC protocol for providing priority channel access and Quality-of-Service (QoS) support in wireless networks to make it possible for selected users to conduct critical communications. Meanwhile, a tree-based MAC protocol is being studied, intending to achieve the advantages of both contention-based and contention-free MAC mechanisms.

  • Optimal Gateway Deployment in Wireless Mesh Networks
It is critical for a wireless mesh network to identify a set of optimal gateway nodes through which traffic entering and leaving the network passes. To this end, we have developed a linear programming model and a heuristic algorithm.

  • Self-Configurable Localization
An effective and flexible technique for localizing nodes of a multi-hop wireless network has been developed. It makes use of selected nodes at the "corners" of such a network as landmarks to estimate the distances by a Euclidean distance estimation model for establishing the coordinates themselves, with an error objective function minimized. The other nodes calculate their coordinates according to the landmarks. The coordinate error of this localization technique is dictated by node density, one-hop distance measurement inaccuracy, and the number of landmarks.

  • CDMA-Based Wireless Mesh Networks
Employed traditionally in cellular systems, the CDMA technology exhibits high traffic capacity and permits efficient medium access control. As a result, this project has pursued applying the CDMA technology to wireless mesh networks for capacity and QoS enhancement.

  • 3-D Positioning Using RFID Gear
The widespread deployment of RFID gear is expected soon. For any RFID application, positioning information is usually vital. Two RFID-oriented localization techniques have been investigated, aiming to determine the position of a given object in a 3-D space making use of RFID tags and readers.

  • Multipath Routing in Wireless Networks
As a research topic key to the UCoMS project, this routing issue has been scheduled for investigation. We have evaluated performance of our proposed modifications to buffer and timer management for TCP applications, under several random network scenarios.

  • Automated Scene Surveillance by Network of Sensors
This work has devised a framework for automated video surveillance, which involves efficient algorithm development and core hardware design and implementation.

  • Development of Asynchronous Wireless Sensor Processors
Power consumption is the chief concern of any sensor application, and the sensor processor often accounts for a major part of overall power consumed by a given sensor. To reduce power consumption, we have arrived at a detailed VLSI layout of our designed sensor processor which operates asynchronously without a central clock and makes use of a mixed signal design domain for the very first time.

(2) Computational and Data Grids

Many interconnected workstations, servers, and storage devices are housed in the research laboratories, mainly, Computer Architecture and Networking (CAN) Lab at Center for Advanced Computer Studies (CACS) of UL Lafayette, while Center for Computation and Technology (CCT) at LSU manages a large computer cluster with 1024 processors. A computational Grid for evaluating our new techniques and facilitating software development has been formed by linking the computer resources of UL Lafayette and CCT at LSU, built using Globus software and tool kits (GT 4.0). It makes use of the Grid Application Toolkit (GAT) provided by GridLab work and intends to connect with cluster nodes and computer resources in other locations to arrive at a large and versatile testbed. As an essential part of GridLab, GAT provides a simple, generic and easy-to-use API for computational applications, such as reservoir simulation. Three critical GAT adaptors for the Globus toolkit have been designed and implemented: GridFTP adaptor, GRAM adaptor, and RLS adaptor, which ease the application use, and also improve the performance, of Grid services.

To facilitte logging and analyzing massive sensor data and production information, an efficient data Grid is being implemented and evaluated on the basis of available storage devices at CAN and CCT connected by links with high data rates realized through LONI (Louisiana Optical Network Initiative) facilities. Secure, high bandwidth and availability, and short access latencies of data and information files kept in the data Grid are basic features required by applications, and they are to be supported using scalable RLS and stripped GridFTP techniques under our development. Scalable RLS built on a DHT (distributed hash table) overlay permits secure replications of file chunks at any location at any time.

Research topics pertinent to Grid computing under investigation include:

  • ResGrid Toolkit and UCoMS Grid Portal
We have advanced considerably toward technical milestones on Grid middleware tool development and on GAT (Grid Application Toolkit) extensions, which have been undertaken since the beginning of this project. The ResGrid toolkit has been designed and implemented for reservoir uncertainty analyses. Based on GridSphere technology, the UCoMS Grid portal is in the final development stage to become the de facto standard for the general Grid portal.
  • Peer-to-Peer Checkpointing for Mobile Grid Systems
Checkpointing and task migration for mobile Grid systems are being investigated under this research. Considered to be very challenging, it needs to deal with node mobility and high link failure rates, and the system has no base stations with reliable storage to hold checkpointing data. Built on a theoretical treatment of optimal checkpointing arrangement for mobile Grid systems, this work has devised heuristics for checkpointing arrangement to yield highly successful recovery probability, serving as the basis of our Reliability Driven (ReD) protocol. Proposed ReD has resulted in favorable performance metrics of interest.
  • Decentralized Multilayered Resource Discovery
This research aims to develop a distributed mechanism for monitoring and discoveing resources (MDS), composed of a flat MDS structure among nodes which make resource announcements (like cluster heads which run MDS). Nodes are segregated according to their resource types offered, constituting layers of resource nodes to allow efficient announcement delivery and resource request fulfilment. This decentralized MDS represents an important project research milestone, based on a flat layered structure to exhibit better scalability and lower MDS traffic overhead without compromising its capability.
  • Large-Scale Data Management
In this research, a lightweight data replica mechanism based on GAT has been developed and under evaluation, intending to offer replica location service and data transfer service across the Grid.
  • Real-Time Performance Visualization and Monitoring
We have installed and tested a drilling data visualization application and also been establishing a real-time drilling performance analysis system in a collaborative workspace.

Discussion forums dedicated for research activities related to Grid computing and its application to petroleum engineering have been established. They intends to facilitate collaborative software and application development. Click LSU or ULL to enter the established wiki's.

(3) Applications

Petroleum applications software related to this research are being developed. They are:

  • Reservoir Uncertainty Analyses
Working toward the technical milestones of real-time drilling study and reservoir simulation, we have conducted large-scale reservoir uncertainty analyses using ResGrid, executed on the UCoMS Grid testbed composed of computer clusters at the participating institutions.

  • Real-Time Production and Drilling Problems Identification
Essential to well production and drilling management, research has extended our pursuit to real-time problems identification using a more accurate diagnostic method and a new mathematical model for incorporation in an integrated identification procedure.

  • Reservoir Simulation Speedup
As reservoir simulation is generally very time-consuming and the simulation speed is dictated by time step granularity, we have devised two techniques to enlarge the simulation time step while maintaining low error amounts via making use of the second- and third-order accuracy finite differences.

Software and Prototyping

(1) Wireless and Sensor Networks
  • Grid tool, GridSphere, employed to manage data acquisition, and to control the operations, of wireless sensor networks. Successful demonstration of this portal application carried out at IEEE/ACM Supercomputing 2006 (SC|06) in November 2006.

  • Wireless mesh testbed development. Using Soekirt boards as mesh routers, a testbed composed of 7 routers to cover some 70 acres on the UL Lafayette campus in this Phase I implementation has completed and been used for evaluating new algorithms and communication protocols developed for petro-engineering and other applications.

(2) Grid Computing

  • ResGrid: a framework for reservoir uncertainty analysis developed as a Grid portal and Grid middleware for use. Demonstrated successfully at IEEE/ACM Supercomputing 2006 (SC|06) in November 2006. Part of developed software adopted for mechanical design. Available on cct's cvs server.

  • GAT-based Data replication tool. Done and is used also by the SURAGrid SCOOP project. Available on cct's cvs server.

  • Simulator for distributed Grid resource monitoring and discovery completed and assessed. Such distributed MDS yields far less traffic overhead and yet maintains a compatible service level as its centralized MDS counterpart (used in existing Grid tools, like GT2, GT3, and GT4).

  • A multi-cluster information tool prototyped, and a multi-cluster job management tool designed.

  • A testbed for peer-to-peer checkpointing arrangements in mobile Grids developed and evaluated. Testbed results demonstrated at IEEE/ACM Supercomputing 2006 (SC|06) in November 2006.

(3) Applications

  • Black oil simulator prototyping with an aid of the Cactus tool.
